Sandra Gauci will continue leading ADPD – The Green Party after receiving a vote of confidence from the party’s members, reaffirming her mandate to guide Malta’s green and progressive political movement. The vote took place during an internal party process that followed recent electoral performance reviews, with Gauci presenting her vision for the party’s direction, strategy, and engagement ahead of upcoming political milestones. Members backed her leadership, signalling support for continuity in ADPD’s advocacy on environmental protection, social justice, good governance, and civil liberties.
Gauci has led ADPD since the merger of Alternattiva Demokratika and Partit Demokratiku, campaigning on issues such as climate action, sustainable development, transparency in planning, and democratic reform. In addressing party delegates, she acknowledged the challenges faced by smaller parties in Malta’s two-party-dominated system but argued that ADPD’s role remains crucial in holding government accountable and shifting public discourse toward long-term ecological and social priorities. She thanked members for their trust and said the vote of confidence strengthens the party’s resolve to build broader coalitions with civil society and present a credible alternative at both local and national level.
Following the vote, Gauci outlined plans to intensify outreach across Malta and Gozo, recruit new candidates, and refine policy proposals on housing affordability, clean energy transition, protection of open spaces, and anti-corruption measures. She stressed that ADPD will remain independent and issue-based, refusing to enter alliances that compromise its core principles, while seeking to grow its support base among voters disillusioned with traditional party politics. The renewed mandate gives Gauci and the ADPD executive the political legitimacy to implement internal reforms, improve communication, and prepare for the next electoral cycle with a clearer message.
The party leadership framed the outcome as an endorsement of stability and purpose, saying the internal democratic exercise demonstrates ADPD’s commitment to accountability, even within its own ranks. With Gauci at the helm, ADPD intends to keep pushing environmental and social issues onto the national agenda, arguing that Malta needs consistent green voices in parliament to ensure future policy is not dictated solely by short-term economic considerations.
