A euro-wide survey has found that the Maltese are increasingly frustrated with the 1c and 2c euro coins, citing their minimal value and frequent use. The tiny denominations, which feature the Mnajdra temple altar design, are often seen as more trouble than they’re worth. Many are calling for their removal or replacement with more practical options.
The coins, introduced when Malta joined the Eurozone in 2008, have been a part of everyday transactions for over 17 years. However, their low value and bulkiness have made them unpopular among locals. The survey’s findings reflect a broader trend across the eurozone, where some countries are reconsidering the usefulness of these small coins.
