A political clash is brewing in Malta between the country’s Prime Minister, Robert Abela, and the President over a rejected $39 million donation from Binance, a prominent cryptocurrency exchange. The donation, which was made in 2018 to Malta’s terminal cancer patient fund, has remained unclaimed due to legal issues. Coinbase executive Conor Grogan recently highlighted that the donation, initially worth $200,000 in BNB, has appreciated to approximately $39 million due to the rise in BNB’s value.

The Prime Minister’s stance on the donation appears to differ from that of the President, sparking debate about the handling of the funds. While details on the President’s exact position are limited, the situation underscores the complexities of managing cryptocurrency donations and the need for clear guidelines on their use. The unclaimed funds could significantly impact Malta’s healthcare sector, potentially covering the salaries of specialized medical staff. This development comes as Binance faces scrutiny over its charitable initiatives, emphasizing the importance of transparency and effective management of donated funds in the cryptocurrency space.
