The Nationalist Party (PN) in Malta has tabled a bill in Parliament to enshrine the right to a healthy environment in the country’s Constitution. This move aims to make environmental protection a fundamental right for Maltese and Gozitan citizens. According to PN Leader Alex Borg, this proposal represents a “historic step” that must be adopted without delay. If passed, it would be the first addition of a new fundamental right to Malta’s Constitution since Independence.
The bill is scheduled for debate during an Opposition parliamentary sitting and has garnered support from environmental NGOs, who have been advocating for stronger environmental protections. This development comes as part of a broader discussion about environmental policies in Malta, with NGOs also expressing concerns over controversial planning reform bills that could grant the Planning Authority unprecedented powers.
The proposed constitutional amendment reflects a growing recognition of the importance of environmental protection and the need to ensure a healthy environment for future generations. By enshrining this right in the Constitution, the PN aims to provide a robust framework for environmental conservation and protection in Malta.
