The government stated on Tuesday that Malta had officially supported the Paris Declaration, a World Health Organization (WHO) project intended to improve mental health policies across Europe.

The endorsement followed a high-level WHO regional conference on mental health cohosted by the French Ministry of Health and the WHO Regional Office for Europe in Paris. Health ministers from fourteen European countries and delegates from thirty other countries came together to consider integrated, cross-sectoral solutions to address mental health issues and stigma.

Malta’s Commitment to Reform

Treating Social Media’s Part
Minister Abela also underlined how social media shapes public perception of mental health. While he denounced their abuse particularly when it comes to the distribution of hate or falsehood, he also urged responsible use of digital media to educate and increase awareness. Particularly worrying to him was children’s exposure to offensive online material.

Looking Ahead
Malta would keep improving its community-based mental health services via the Paris Declaration, Abela noted. He called the government’s earlier decision to include psychiatric and physical care at Mater Dei Hospital a “wise and forward-looking” move also.

The Paris Declaration asks nations to give mental health top priority at the policy level, improve community services, and work across sectors—including education, employment, and social services—to create inclusive and resilient support networks.

With changes founded on international best practices and extensive stakeholder participation, Malta’s endorsement indicates a fresh emphasis on mental health as a top national priority.
