Approval of a significant business expansion in Burmarrad, which would represent a major advancement in the area’s change from a rural village to a commercial centre, is anticipated from the Planning Authority. The present Burmarrad Commercials car rental and repair facility will be replaced by a four-storey shopping mall featuring offices, retail shops, catering facilities, a supermarket, and basement parking for 572 cars.
2019 zoning revisions that designated the region for commercial use enabled the development by Burmarrad Commercials Ltd, owned by the Gauci family. Although the local plan makes no particular mention of supermarkets, precedent from other commercial areas argues for their inclusion.
Traffic and Land Development
1,818 more daily car trips are anticipated from the project. Infrastructure Malta will improve the Erba’ Mwieżeb roundabout—especially the Kennedy Drive arm—so reducing this; the developer will help with 3% of the expenses.
Visual and environmental effects
The design was commended by the case officer for enhancing the urban fabric of the region. After looking at visual effect evaluations, the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage approved the plan. Guaranteeing €100,000 will make sure that an adjoining heavy vehicle yard is restored to agricultural use.
To improve accessibility and integration with the surroundings, a three-metre pedestrian footpath will also be built along the rural-facing boundary of the site.
