Clayton Bartolo, the former Minister for Tourism, has apologized to parliament over a scandal involving his wife’s job. The controversy surrounds Amanda Muscat, Bartolo’s wife, who was promoted to a consultancy role and received a salary for 13 months without fulfilling her duties. This scandal led to Bartolo’s resignation as Minister for Tourism and as a Labour MP in November 2024.

An investigation by Standards Commissioner Joseph Azzopardi found that Bartolo, along with fellow Minister Clint Camilleri, breached the ministerial code of ethics through the consultancy contract given to Muscat. The investigation revealed that Muscat was promoted to a higher grade as policy consultant despite lacking the necessary qualifications. She continued to work as Bartolo’s private secretary, receiving her salary from the Gozo ministry, without producing any consultancy reports.

Despite the controversy, Bartolo has expressed his commitment to continuing to serve as a voice for his constituents. He has also highlighted his achievements during his tenure as Minister for Tourism. Bartolo’s apology to parliament marks a significant development in this scandal, and it remains to be seen how his constituents and the wider public will respond to his efforts to make amends.
