CareMalta Group has been actively supporting initiatives that advance digital health innovation in Malta, working in close collaboration with the University of Malta to bridge academic research and real-world application in health and social care. Through a Memorandum of Understanding signed with the Department of Computer Information Systems within the Faculty of Information and Communication Technology, CareMalta Group and the University outlined a shared vision to harness artificial intelligence, robotics, and digital health to shape the future of care. The agreement reflects a commitment to place both institutions at the forefront of digital transformation in Malta’s health and social sectors, driving solutions that enhance the quality of life for residents, caregivers, and communities while promoting knowledge exchange and cutting-edge research in emerging areas.
This partnership has materialized in joint events such as the symposium titled “The Power of Digital Transformation in Healthcare: Innovations and Impact,” organized on April 3, 2025, by the Faculty of Health Sciences in collaboration with the Faculty of ICT. The event brought together healthcare professionals, researchers, academics, students, and policymakers to explore the evolving role of digital innovation in transforming healthcare delivery and strategy, both locally and globally. Speakers included Mr Euchar Sultana, Chief Information Officer at the Ministry for Health and Active Ageing, who presented Malta’s national and European digital health strategy, and graduates of the MSc in Digital Health programme who showcased applied research using machine learning and electronic health records to predict hospital readmissions and improve outpatient management. A panel led by Dr Ermira Tartari Bonnici examined the role of AI in healthcare, with distinguished participants from government, Malta Enterprise, and MEDTech addressing clinical decision support, predictive analytics, and the ethical, regulatory, and practical implications of adoption.
CareMalta Group has also co-organized the Symposium on Person Safety & Clinical Risk Management in Health and Social Care with the University’s Department of Health Systems Management & Leadership. The event gathered local and international experts, stakeholders, and healthcare professionals to discuss best practices to enhance safety and risk management in healthcare and social care settings. Minister for Health and Active Ageing Jo Etienne Abela underlined the importance of fostering a culture of safety and accountability, while CEO James Sciriha highlighted collaborative efforts needed to drive progress in patient safety through education, innovation, and evidence-based practices.
Beyond symposia, the collaboration supports staff training, internships, and dissemination of research findings to optimize services and continue driving innovation in elderly care. By engaging management, staff, residents, and their relatives in co-creating meaningful innovation, CareMalta Group and the University aim to build a vibrant network of professionals and researchers committed to advancing person-centred digital solutions. The initiatives align with Malta’s broader digital health trajectory, which includes telemedicine centres providing 24-hour medical advice and integration of mobile health solutions, ensuring digital technologies improve access, patient safety, and quality of care for everyone.
