Malta joins European Effort To Donate Mpox Vaccines to Africa

Malta Bulletin Avatar

Malta has joined forces with other European countries to combat the Mpox outbreak in Africa, as part of the Team Europe initiative led by DG Health Emergency Preparedness and Response (HERA). This collective effort aims to slow down the disease by donating vaccines and mobilizing resources. Approximately half a million vaccines will be donated by European countries, with the first consignment already delivered to Kinshasa, Congo, by HERA Director General Laurent Muschel.

Mpox, also known as Monkeypox, is a viral infection that can be transmitted through contact with infected animals or humans, particularly through close physical contact, including sexual contact. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared a public health emergency of international concern in August due to the spread of the Clade I variant, which is predominantly found in Central Africa and associated with more severe illness and higher mortality rates.

Malta has previously investigated 35 cases related to the global outbreak, with the latest case confirmed as Clade II, a less severe variant primarily spread through sexual contact. In response, Health Authorities have issued guidelines to prevent the spread of the virus, emphasizing safe sex practices, open conversations about sexual health, and good hand hygiene. The public is urged to stay informed and follow recommended guidelines to ensure their safety and well-being.
