Freshers Week Under Fire Students Slams KSU for Prioritising Profits over People

Malta Bulletin Avatar

For the third year in a row, the organisers of Freshers’ Week at the University of Malta have faced criticism for prioritising commercial interests over student-centred activities. Moviment Graffitti, Pulse, and S-Cubed condemned Kunsill Studenti Universitarji (KSU) for allowing private companies to dominate the event, rather than celebrating student achievements and promoting campus engagement.

In a joint statement, the three organizations expressed concern that Freshers’ Week has become overly commercialised, with companies unrelated to the university’s educational experience occupying prime spaces. The central quadrangle, Parking Number Four, and the area leading to the Gateway Building will be taken over by private enterprises, leaving student organisations relegated to a restricted, crowded, and noisy area near the main library.

This criticism echoes Moviment Graffitti’s calls for reform in 2022. The groups advocate for student organisations and academics to be at the forefront of Freshers’ Week, with activities and events tailored to students’ interests. They urge KSU to prioritise student engagement over corporate sponsorship.

The organisations propose that the University of Malta provide financial support to KSU, ensuring that student-centred activities remain the focus of Freshers’ Week. By doing so, the university can foster a welcoming environment that promotes student interaction, exploration, and academic growth.

The controversy surrounding Freshers’ Week highlights the tension between commercial interests and student well-being. As the university prepares to welcome new students, it remains to be seen how KSU will address these concerns and strike a balance between sponsorship and student-centred initiatives.
