A sequel to _World War Z_ has been in discussion since before the original 2013 film starring Brad Pitt even reached theaters, yet the project has spent more than a decade navigating development limbo. At various points David Fincher was attached to direct and Steven Knight penned a draft, with Paramount at one time scheduling the film for June 9, 2017. That date came and went, and in February 2019 Paramount officially pulled the plug on Fincher’s version. One major factor cited was China’s ban on zombie and ghost films, which complicated the global box office prospects for a big-budget undead sequel. In October 2023 Fincher told _GQ_ that his take would have been tonally closer to HBO’s _The Last of Us_, focusing on a darker, more intense and character-driven story. Brad Pitt later reflected in a 2019 interview that the script “was really good” and that Fincher’s plans “just haven’t been seen before”.
Despite the 2019 cancellation, momentum around _World War Z 2_ was reignited in 2026. At CinemaCon in April 2026, Paramount officially confirmed that a new _World War Z_ film is in development, marking the first concrete studio movement on the franchise in years. No director, writer, cast, or release date has been announced yet, but the confirmation ends a 13-year gap since the original. The news prompted Mireille Enos, who played Karin Lane in the first film, to tell _ScreenRant_ that while earlier conversations about a sequel did include her character, she has received no official contact about the new project so far, though she hopes to return.
There is currently no official trailer for a studio-backed _World War Z 2_. Several fan-made “concept trailers” have circulated online in 2025, including one titled _World War Z 2 (2025) – First Trailer, Brad Pitt_ that claims to show Pitt returning as Gerry Lane to face a darker, global threat with faster, smarter undead. These are not confirmed as official Paramount footage. As of 2026, industry reports suggest the film is back on track and in pre-production, with filming expected to begin later this year. Rumors point to a story exploring a mutated virus and new types of infected emerging across Europe and Asia, with Brad Pitt set to return. Unverified casting chatter has mentioned Rosamund Pike and Pedro Pascal potentially joining, but the studio has not confirmed any names.
The original _World War Z_, directed by Marc Forster and loosely adapted from Max Brooks’ novel, grossed over $540 million worldwide and was praised for scaling zombie cinema to a global, large-format spectacle. With the first film finding renewed streaming success on Paramount+ and zombie content surging in popularity, Paramount appears ready to revisit the franchise. Whether this announcement results in genuine production momentum or becomes another false start remains to be seen, but the studio’s 2026 confirmation at CinemaCon is the clearest sign yet that _World War Z 2_ is finally moving forward after years of uncertainty. Stay tuned for official updates on creative team, cast, release window, and a legitimate trailer as development progresses.
