A €90 million project to electrify Malta’s bus fleet has been abandoned, according to revelations made by the Nationalist Party (PN). The project, which was initially touted as a key initiative to reduce Malta’s carbon footprint and improve air quality, had been earmarked to receive significant funding from the European Union.
However, the PN has disclosed that the government has quietly ditched plans to tap into this EU funding, effectively putting the entire project “down the drain.” This decision has sparked widespread criticism, with many arguing that it represents a missed opportunity for Malta to invest in a more sustainable and environmentally-friendly public transportation system.
The electrification of Malta’s bus fleet was seen as a crucial step towards reducing the country’s reliance on fossil fuels and decreasing greenhouse gas emissions. The project had also been expected to improve air quality in urban areas, particularly in Valletta and other major towns. With the project now abandoned, concerns are being raised about the government’s commitment to addressing environmental and sustainability issues.
