A senior official of the Japanese Football Association, Masanaga Kageyama, has been sentenced to an 18-month suspended jail term in France for viewing images of child sexual abuse on a flight. Kageyama, 58, was detained during a stopover at Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris while en route to Chile, where he was scheduled to attend the Under-20 World Cup. The flight attendants detected him viewing the images on his laptop in the business class cabin and reported him to the authorities.

Kageyama claimed that he was an artist and that the photos were generated by artificial intelligence. However, he admitted to viewing the images and expressed shame during his court appearance. The court imposed a fine of 5,000 euros ($5,830) and prohibited Kageyama from working with minors for 10 years. He will also be listed in the French national sex offenders’ register and is banned from returning to France for the next decade.

The Japanese Football Association announced Kageyama’s immediate dismissal, emphasizing their commitment to protecting children and preventing child abuse. Kageyama had a distinguished career as a player and coach in Japan, including managing the country’s under-20, under-19, and under-18 teams. This incident highlights the importance of awareness and education about child sexual abuse and the severe consequences of engaging in such activities.
