As tensions between Israel and Iran reach the fifth day of military conflict, G7 leaders have collectively pushed for a “de-escalation of hostilities in the Middle East,” including a Gaza ceasefire. While stressing their dedication to regional peace and stability, the G7 also upheld Israel’s right to self-defense.

The early departure of US President Donald Trump, citing the escalating Middle Eastern situation as justification, interrupted the summit taken in Kananaskis, Canada. “I have to get back early for obvious reasons,” Trump told journalists before flying back to Washington Monday night.

The US president’s exit will cause him to miss planned meetings with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. Though he left early, the White House maintained Trump had a “great day” at the summit in light of the signing of a UK-US trade deal and advances toward a possible agreement with Canada.

Military Tensions Increase

Air raid sirens once more sounded in Tel Aviv as Trump departed; early Tuesday explosions shook Tehran. According to Iranian state media, missile attacks and extensive air defense operations in the capital were reported. This followed Israel’s attack on Iran’s state broadcaster, which had a presenter off-air midway via broadcast.

According to Iranian sources, Tehran’s skies exploded, which suggests that more vengeance might be in the works. Through his platform Truth Social, Trump exhorted Iranians to “immediately evacuate” the city without going any further.

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth revealed the dispatch of more American assets to the area but stressed the country was not participating in the Israeli attack on Iran. Still, the Pentagon has acknowledged that the United States is helping to intercept missiles aimed against Israel.

Diplomatic Challenges and Division at G7

Divisions over how to approach the Israel-Iran issue arose inside the G7. Though he finally joined other leaders in supporting Israel and denouncing Iranian nuclear ambitions, Trump allegedly intended to reject a united G7 statement on the conflict.
