According to the Health Ministry of the enclave, at least 27 Palestinians were killed and many more were hurt in an Israeli raid aimed at an aid distribution center in the Rafah governorate of southern Gaza. Israel and the United States helped fund the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), which ran the site.
The event is the most recent in a string of deadly strikes on aid workers, leading UN Secretary-General António Guterres to urge an independent inquiry. Since the GHF started operation on May 27, daily assaults on civilians queuing for assistance have been documented.
The Israeli military verified, meanwhile, that three of its troops were killed in the Jabalia region of northern Gaza, in what seems to be the deadliest assault on its forces since the March ceasefire with Hamas collapsed.
At least 54,381 Palestinians have died in Israel’s continuing assault, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, and more than 124,000 have been hurt. By contrast, the attacks on October 7, 2023, led by Hamas, left an estimated 1,139 Israelis dead and more than 200 abducted.
