Hungary has officially been denied access to a significant portion of EU funds, approximately one billion euros, due to the country’s failure to meet the European Union’s democratic standards. This decision was made following a report by the European Commission, which highlighted Hungary’s non-compliance with EU values and principles .

The European Commission’s report specifically pointed to Hungary’s lack of judicial independence, as well as concerns regarding the country’s respect for fundamental rights, including those of vulnerable groups such as women, LGBTIQ+ individuals, Roma, migrants, asylum seekers, and refugees .These concerns have been ongoing for several years, with the European Parliament having previously expressed its concerns regarding the deteriorating rule of law situation in Hungary.

The denial of EU funds to Hungary is a significant development, as the country is one of the largest recipients of EU funding. The European Commission’s decision to withhold these funds is aimed at protecting the EU’s financial interests and ensuring that EU funds are used in a manner that is consistent with EU values and principles .

This decision is also seen as a warning to other EU member states that may be tempted to undermine EU values and principles. The European Commission has made it clear that it will take a strong stance in defending EU values and ensuring that member states comply with EU law and principles.
