The Golden Trailer Awards have become Hollywood’s ‘Oscars’ for film previews, elevating the often-anonymous craft of trailer editing into a celebrated art form and recognizing the creatives who condense 120 minutes of cinema into a two-minute “minor opus.” The gala traces its origins to 1999, when co-founders Monica Brady and Evelyn Watters set out to hire a team to produce a trailer and were stunned to discover that the editors, designers, and marketers behind some of the moviegoing experience’s most memorable moments were completely unrecognized. As Brady told AFP, trailer editors weren’t credited on trailers, weren’t credited in films, and there wasn’t even a directory to find them. That gap prompted the pair to launch the Golden Trailer Awards, with an inaugural ceremony in New York that handed out 19 prizes and sought to give credit where none existed.
Now in its 26th edition, held May 28, 2026, in Los Angeles, the awards have expanded into the industry’s definitive showcase for motion picture marketing, honoring work across more than 100 categories that span film trailers, posters, television advertisements, and video game marketing. The ceremony recognizes excellence in every genre from action and drama to animation, horror, and faith-based films, as well as innovation in motion graphics, teasers, and original concepts. The night’s most coveted statuette, Best of Show, went to the trailer for the sci-fi film _Project Hail Mary_, starring Ryan Gosling, created by Wild Card Creative Group. The same trailer also won Best Drama and Best Music, while Wild Card helped _Wuthering Heights_ take Most Original Trailer. Other 2026 winners included _The Running Man_ for Best Action, _Lee Cronin’s The Mummy_ for Best Horror, _Disclosure Day_ for Best Summer 2026 Blockbuster Trailer, and _The Devil Wears Prada 2_ for Best Teaser, produced by Buddha Jones.
What defines a winning trailer, according to co-founder Evelyn Watters, is first and foremost a great hook. A standout preview likely delivers a fresh storyline, compelling characters, an emotional moment, and something audiences haven’t seen before. Watters describes the ideal trailer as “a tempting appetizer, it is not the whole meal.” Creative directors like Taylor Engel of Create Advertising Group, which earned 16 nominations in 2026 for work on _Sinners_, _Tron: Ares_, and _Only Murders in the Building_, compare editing a trailer to assembling a puzzle. Sometimes teams receive the full movie, other times only dailies or isolated scenes, and the challenge lies in combining audio, video, and editing effects to tell a different story or showcase the film in a way that builds anticipation without giving everything away.
Over 26 years the Golden Trailer Awards have grown from a niche gathering to a major industry event that validates the cultural impact of trailers themselves. The show has been called “the Hollywood Awards show for the post-MTV era,” reflecting how crucial short-form marketing has become in a crowded marketplace for attention. By crediting agencies like AV Squad, which took Agency of the Year in 2026, and spotlighting editors and creative directors who shape audience expectations before a ticket is sold, the Golden Trailer Awards ensure that the art of the tease finally takes center stage.
