A new biography of Queen Elizabeth II was launched at The Phoenicia in Valletta, marking another major addition to the growing canon of literature devoted to Britain’s longest-reigning monarch. The event brought together historians, diplomats, and members of Malta’s literary and cultural community to celebrate the release, underscoring the enduring fascination with Elizabeth II nearly four years after her death in September 2022. The Phoenicia, one of Malta’s most historic hotels and a frequent venue for cultural launches, provided a fittingly regal backdrop for a book that promises to illuminate the private and public dimensions of the Queen’s 70-year reign.

The biography joins a wave of 2026 releases timed to the centenary of Elizabeth II’s birth, including Hugo Vickers’ _Queen Elizabeth II_, published in May 2026, and Robert Hardman’s _Elizabeth II: In Private. In Public. The Inside Story_, released in April 2026. Hardman’s work draws on accounts from members of the British royal family and recounts details of the Queen’s final months, her relationship with Prime Ministers from Churchill to Johnson, and her steady navigation of political upheaval and family tragedy. Vickers’ book, based on sixty years of observation and research with never-before-seen sources, decodes hidden patterns in the monarch’s behaviour to shed new light on the woman behind the crown.

The launch at The Phoenicia also reflects a broader moment in royal historiography. In April 2026, Buckingham Palace announced that historian Anna Keay had been appointed to write the first official biography of Elizabeth II, with unprecedented access to her personal and official papers held in the Royal Archives. Keay will be able to speak with members of the royal family, friends, and household staff, and the project is expected to move beyond public duties to offer a more intimate portrait of the Queen’s reflections, relationships, and decision-making across decades of historic change.

While the specific author of the volume unveiled at The Phoenicia was not named in the announcement, the event continues a tradition of royal biographies being introduced in significant international settings. Similar launches, such as the Serbian edition of Sally Bedell Smith’s _Queen Elizabeth – The Life of a Modern Monarch_ presented at the British Residence in Belgrade, have emphasized the Queen’s global stature and the diplomatic interest in her life story. The Phoenicia launch reinforces Malta’s own historical ties to the monarchy—Elizabeth II lived on the island as Princess Elizabeth between 1949 and 1951—and positions Valletta as a cultural hub for reflecting on her legacy of service, duty, and steadfastness. The new biography, like others emerging in this centenary year, aims to trace her life across an era of unprecedented social change while assessing the achievement of a sovereign who became, for millions, the very embodiment of monarchy.
