Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal meet in Saturday’s Champions League final at the Puskas Arena in Budapest, a clash widely framed as a contest of contrasting styles between PSG’s attacking firepower and Arsenal’s defensive solidity and set-piece strength. The match pits holders PSG, aiming to defend their crown after last season’s 5-0 demolition of Inter Milan, against an Arsenal side that has never won the trophy and is appearing in only its second European final, 20 years after losing to Barcelona in 2006. Mikel Arteta’s team arrives having ended a 22-year wait for the Premier League title, conceding just 27 goals across 38 games, while Luis Enrique’s PSG bring a front line of Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembele, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and one of Desire Doue or Bradley Barcola, backed by a midfield of Joao Neves, Vitinha, Fabian Ruiz and Warren Zaire-Emery.

A major talking point is Arsenal’s set-piece threat, which has become a defining strength under Arteta and set-piece coach Nicolas Jover. Nearly 40% of Arsenal’s goals during their Premier League-winning run came from dead-ball situations, with centre-back Gabriel Magalhaes causing havoc at corners. PSG goalkeeper Matvey Safonov has been identified as a potential weak link, and Arsenal will look to put him under heavy pressure. Luis Enrique acknowledged the tactic, saying, “People may say that they don’t score team goals, but who cares about that? Ask any Arsenal fan and I’m sure they’re delighted”.

PSG’s left flank poses Arsenal’s biggest defensive problem. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia has arguably been the competition’s best player with 10 goals, supported by dynamic left-back Nuno Mendes, described as arguably the best left-back in world football. Arteta must decide whether to start Jurrien Timber, just back from a groin injury, or use centre-back Cristhian Mosquera or move Declan Rice to right-back, though Rice is viewed as vital in midfield against Vitinha. On the opposite side, Bukayo Saka versus Mendes is a key individual duel, with Mendes having enjoyed success against Saka in prior meetings. Should Mendes neutralise Arsenal’s main attacking outlet again, PSG would gain a major advantage.

Minutes and freshness are another focus. PSG’s expected starting XI has played a total of 32,115 minutes across all competitions this season, while Arsenal’s has logged 37,664, a difference of 5,544 minutes, equivalent to 62 more games. PSG’s attacking stars Kvaratskhelia, Barcola and Doue have all played under 3,000 minutes, whereas Viktor Gyokeres, Saka and Eberechi Eze have each exceeded that mark. Arteta previously noted that PSG and Bayern’s 5-4 semi-final thriller was due to their ability to better distribute minutes, saying “to deliver that much quality you have to be very fresh” and that all PSG players were available “at their very best”. This raises the rest-versus-rhythm question: whether Arsenal’s high-intensity schedule gives them sharpness, or PSG’s managed workload leaves them fresher late in the game.

Luis Enrique’s record in one-off finals is 11 wins out of 12, and PSG’s route to Budapest has hardened them, brushing aside English opposition and overpowering Bayern in the semi-finals. Arteta, meanwhile, has urged his players to “own the moment” and play with clarity, courage and a relentless desire to win, saying the Premier League title has to be a platform to reach bigger destinations. Former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger said the team’s main strength is its ability to keep a clean sheet, which is very important in a final.

For PSG, the match is about cementing status as European greats and proving last year’s triumph was not an exception. Only Real Madrid have retained the Champions League in the modern era, and PSG now have the chance to join that conversation. For Arsenal, it is about ending 20 years of waiting and completing a historic double. The final may hinge on whether Arsenal can suffocate PSG’s transitions before Dembele, Doue and Kvaratskhelia drag the match into the frantic spaces where Luis Enrique’s side thrive, or whether PSG’s technical clarity and depth overcome Arsenal’s defensive organisation and set-piece excellence.
