US President Donald Trump has urged other nations to send warships to help secure the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping lane, amid escalating tensions with Iran. Trump emphasized that countries receiving oil through the strait must take responsibility for its safety, stating, “The countries of the World that receive Oil through the Hormuz Strait must take care of that passage, and we will help — A LOT!” He specifically mentioned China, France, Japan, South Korea, and Britain as potential contributors.

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical waterway, with around 20% of global oil and liquefied natural gas supplies passing through it. Iran’s blockade has disrupted shipping, pushing up oil prices and raising concerns about the global economy. Trump warned that the US would take action to secure the strait, saying, “In the meantime, the United States will be bombing the hell out of the shoreline, and continually shooting Iranian boats and ships out of the water”.

The UK has expressed support for securing the strait, with a Ministry of Defence spokesperson stating that they are discussing options with allies to ensure shipping safety. Meanwhile, India has sought safe passage for 22 vessels stranded near the Strait of Hormuz, highlighting the global impact of the crisis.
