Reverend Jesse Jackson, a prominent figure in the US Civil Rights Movement and close associate of Martin Luther King Jr., has died at the age of 84. Jackson’s legacy is marked by his tireless advocacy for racial justice, economic equality, and voting rights. He was a key figure in the 1960s civil rights movement, participating in the Selma to Montgomery marches and leading Operation Breadbasket, an initiative to improve economic opportunities for African Americans.

Jackson’s influence extended beyond the US, with diplomatic efforts securing the release of American hostages in Syria and Cuba. He ran for president twice, in 1984 and 1988, and although he didn’t win, his campaigns helped shape the modern progressive movement. Jackson was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2000 and continued to advocate for social justice until his death.
