Former UK ambassador to the US, Peter Mandelson, has been arrested by London police on suspicion of misconduct in public office, following revelations about his ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Mandelson, a pivotal figure in British politics, was taken into custody at his Camden home and later released on bail pending further investigation. The arrest is linked to allegations that Mandelson shared sensitive government information with Epstein, including during the 2008 financial crisis.
Mandelson’s appointment as ambassador was already under scrutiny, and he was sacked by Prime Minister Keir Starmer in September after documents showed the extent of his friendship with Epstein. The veteran politician has apologized to Epstein’s victims, saying he regrets believing Epstein’s lies about his criminality. The UK government is set to release documents related to Mandelson’s vetting procedure, which could escalate pressure on the prime minister and other senior ministers.
