A recent incident involving black smoke emissions from a factory in Qormi, Malta, has prompted a local MP to advocate for stronger clean air laws. The push for change comes amid concerns about air quality in the area, with Qormi being part of the Air Quality Management Area (AQMA) due to its poor air quality. The Environment and Resources Authority (ERA) has an Air Quality Plan for Malta 2025, focusing on reducing pollution, particularly from transport and industrial sources.

The current air quality in Qormi is rated as “Fair”, with pollutant levels indicating potential health risks for sensitive groups. The incident has highlighted the need for effective enforcement of environmental regulations to protect public health and the environment.
