France has announced stricter limits on the acceptable level of cereulide, a toxin produced by the Bacillus cereus bacterium, in infant formula. This move comes after several major manufacturers, including Nestle, Danone, and Lactalis, recalled products in over 60 countries due to potential contamination concerns. Cereulide can cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, and investigations are underway into the deaths of two infants who consumed possibly contaminated powdered milk.

The new threshold will be 0.014 micrograms of cereulide per kilogram of body weight, down from 0.03 micrograms, aiming to strengthen protections for infants. The French agriculture ministry emphasized that protecting infant health is the top priority. This decision aligns with updated guidance from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), expected on February 2.

The recalls have raised concerns about food safety and supply chain vulnerabilities, highlighting the need for standardized regulations and proactive monitoring. Parents are advised to check for recalls and follow official guidance from healthcare professionals.
