Russian President Vladimir Putin has agreed to a personal request from US President Donald Trump to halt strikes on Kyiv until February 1, amid harsh winter temperatures. The Kremlin confirmed that Putin agreed to Trump’s request to create “favorable conditions” for peace talks. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has welcomed the development, saying Ukraine is ready to reciprocate by halting attacks on Russian refinery infrastructure.
The agreement comes as Ukraine faces extreme cold, with temperatures expected to drop to minus 30 degrees Celsius in the coming days. Russia’s strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure have left millions without heating, raising concerns about a humanitarian crisis. The pause in strikes is seen as an opportunity to create space for diplomacy, with talks expected to resume in Abu Dhabi.
