US President Donald Trump has announced a 10% tariff on imports from eight European countries, including the UK, France, Germany, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, the Netherlands, and Finland, effective February 1, 2026. The tariffs will increase to 25% on June 1 if a deal isn’t reached for the US to acquire Greenland, a Danish territory. Trump claims Greenland is vital to US security due to its strategic location and mineral deposits, and that Russia and China are seeking to control it.
The move has sparked widespread criticism from European leaders, who argue that the tariffs undermine transatlantic relations and risk a dangerous downward spiral. Protests have also erupted in Greenland and Denmark, with demonstrators demanding the right to self-determination.
