US President Donald Trump has warned Canada that it will face a 100% tariff on all goods imported to the US if it completes a trade deal with China. Trump made the threat in a post on Truth Social, stating that if Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney thinks he’ll make Canada a “Drop Off Port” for Chinese goods, he’s “sorely mistaken”. Trump also claimed that China would “eat Canada alive” if the deal goes through, destroying its businesses and social fabric.
The tension between the US and Canada escalated after Carney’s speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, where he criticized powerful nations using economic integration as a weapon. Trump responded by withdrawing Canada’s invitation to join his “Board of Peace” initiative. This isn’t the first time Trump has threatened tariffs on Canada; he’s previously targeted the country over trade disputes and even suggested it become the 51st US state.
