Colombia has signed a historic $4.3 billion deal with Sweden’s Saab to purchase 17 Gripen fighter jets, significantly enhancing its defense capabilities. This strategic move comes amid rising tensions with the United States, particularly regarding US military operations in the region targeting alleged drug trafficking activities. Colombian President Gustavo Petro announced the agreement, emphasizing the jets will serve as a “deterrent weapon to achieve peace” and protect the country’s sovereignty.
The deal marks a notable shift in Colombia’s defense procurement strategy, choosing Sweden over competing offers from the US and France. Petro highlighted the complexities of the current geopolitical landscape, stating threats to Colombia’s security could emerge from any direction. This acquisition is seen as a crucial step in strengthening Colombia’s military prowess and navigating the challenging regional dynamics.
The move has also sparked tensions with US President Donald Trump, who has accused Petro of being involved in drug trafficking and previously withdrawn US financial aid to Colombia. The deal underscores Colombia’s efforts to assert its independence and prioritize its national security interests.
