The Blurring Lines of Music Creation AI vs Human

Robert Avatar

A recent global survey has revealed a striking reality: nearly all listeners, about 97%, are unable to distinguish between songs created by artificial intelligence and those composed by humans. This finding underscores the rapid advancement of AI-generated music, which has become increasingly sophisticated, making it challenging for people to tell the difference.

The survey, conducted by Ipsos for France-based music streaming platform Deezer, polled 9,000 participants across eight countries, including the US, UK, France, and Japan. The results show that over half of the respondents felt uncomfortable about their inability to tell AI and human compositions apart. Many are concerned about the impact of AI on the music industry, with 51% believing it will lead to a flood of lower-quality music, and almost two-thirds fearing it could stifle creativity.

Interestingly, AI-generated music is gaining traction on streaming platforms, with nearly one-third of daily streams on Deezer being AI-created. In response, Deezer has started labeling AI-generated content to promote transparency, while Spotify encourages artists to disclose AI use in their music production.
