The National Basketball Association (NBA) is reassessing its policies to educate players, coaches, and personnel about the significant risks associated with gambling. This move comes after a recent betting scandal led to the arrest of Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier and Portland head coach Chauncey Billups by FBI agents as part of a sports gambling and betting investigation.
According to a memo reportedly sent to teams on October 27, 2025, the NBA aims to ensure that all personnel understand the potential consequences of gambling on their careers and livelihoods. The league is reviewing policies on injury reporting, training, education, and safety measures for players. Additionally, the NBA plans to utilize artificial intelligence and other tools to detect improper activities and enhance its integrity monitoring programs.
The memo highlights concerns about “prop” bets, particularly those related to individual player performance, which involve heightened integrity concerns and require additional scrutiny. The NBA believes there is more that can be done from a legal and regulatory perspective to protect the integrity of the league and its affiliated leagues.
Rozier was charged in connection with a scheme involving “prop” bets during a March 2023 game when he played for the Charlotte Hornets. Billups is charged with participating in rigged poker games and using his fame to lure other players into the games. Both have denied wrongdoing through their lawyers and have been placed on administrative leave by the NBA.
