Denmark has announced a ban on all civilian drone flights across the country from Monday to Friday, coinciding with a high-security EU summit in Copenhagen. The transport ministry cited security concerns as the reason for the ban, aiming to prevent potential confusion between enemy and legitimate drones. This move comes after mysterious drone sightings across Denmark since September 22 prompted the closure of several airports, with Denmark hinting at possible Russian involvement, which Moscow has firmly rejected.

The ban, which carries penalties of fines or imprisonment for up to two years for violators, is designed to simplify the work of police and other authorities during the summit. Transport Minister Thomas Danielsen emphasized the need for extra security measures, stating, “We cannot accept that foreign drones create uncertainty and disruption in society as we have experienced recently.” Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen added that the authorities must ensure the best possible working conditions for the armed forces and police during the summit.

The EU summit, scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday, will bring together heads of government, prompting Denmark to take precautionary measures to ensure security. NATO has also enhanced its vigilance in the Baltic region, deploying additional assets, including an air-defence frigate, in response to the drone incursions. Neighbouring Norway is investigating possible drone sightings near its largest military base, Orland, where F-35 fighter jets are stationed.
