Portugal has declared a day of national mourning following a devastating funicular accident in Lisbon that claimed the lives of at least 15 people. The incident occurred on Wednesday evening when the historic Elevador da Gloria funicular derailed and crashed into a building, injuring 18 others. The Portuguese government, led by Prime Minister Luis Montenegro, expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, stating it had “brought grief to families and dismay to the country”.

The funicular, a popular tourist attraction and integral part of Lisbon’s public transport network, has been in operation since 1885 and was electrified in 1915. The accident has sent shockwaves through the city, with many expressing condolences to the families of the victims. European Union chief Ursula von der Leyen offered her sympathies, while President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and Lisbon Mayor Carlos Moedas also paid their respects.

An investigation into the accident’s circumstances has been launched, with authorities working to determine the cause of the derailment. Preliminary reports suggest that a loose cable may have contributed to the crash. The city’s public transport operator, Carris, has stated that it complied with all maintenance protocols, with general maintenance carried out every four years and intermediate maintenance every two years.

The accident has raised concerns about the safety of Lisbon’s historic funiculars, with the city’s mayor ordering immediate inspections of all funicular operations. The incident has also highlighted the importance of ensuring the safety and well-being of both residents and tourists who rely on these iconic transportation systems.
