Greek authorities have made a significant bust, seizing a record half-tonne of khat worth approximately €1.5 million. The narcotic leaf was hidden in a cargo at Athens airport, bound for the United States. This substantial seizure marks one of the largest hauls of its kind in Greece, highlighting the country’s efforts to combat drug trafficking.
In recent months, Greece has been actively working to dismantle drug trafficking rings, with notable successes. In May 2024, Greek authorities seized over 300 kilograms of cocaine, worth millions of euros, hidden in containers at the port of Piraeus. The operation resulted in the arrest of four individuals, believed to be part of an international drug trafficking gang.
Greece’s strategic location makes it an attractive route for drug traffickers, but the country’s authorities are stepping up their efforts to prevent this. With the help of international partners, such as the US Homeland Security Investigations office, Greek authorities are working tirelessly to disrupt and dismantle drug trafficking networks.
