The phrase “All the pub’s a stage” seems fitting for Shakespeare companies returning to their roots, bringing classic plays to life in casual, pub settings. One such company, Bar’d Work, is a Sydney-based Shakespeare troupe that’s been entertaining audiences with interactive, sing-along versions of Shakespeare’s comedies in iconic pubs across the city. Their production of “Much Ado About Nothing” is a fast-paced, funny, and irreverent take on the classic comedy, featuring actors who mingle with the audience before, during, and after the show.

Similarly, other Shakespeare companies, like the Chesapeake Shakespeare Company, have also been bringing Shakespeare to life in non-traditional settings. Their production of “The Adventures of Pericles” is a family-friendly, 90-minute adaptation of Shakespeare’s play, set in a scenic outdoor environment. The company’s artistic director notes that the play’s themes of adventure, disruption, and renewal are particularly relevant in today’s world.

The Grassroots Shakespeare Company takes a more unconventional approach, embracing the spirit of Shakespeare’s original productions. They ditch traditional sets, costumes, and directors, instead opting for a collaborative, actor-driven approach that brings the audience into the performance. This style allows for a unique experience each time, as the actors respond to the audience’s energy.

The Island Shakespeare Festival also returns to its roots with productions in non-traditional settings, like the Whidbey Institute woods. Their 2021 production of “As You Like It” was a testament to the company’s resilience during the pandemic, with the cast and crew working hard to create a safe and engaging show for audiences.

These companies embody the spirit of Shakespeare’s original productions, which were often performed in inns and outdoor amphitheaters for diverse audiences. By returning to their roots, they’re making Shakespeare more accessible and enjoyable for modern audiences.
