Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with US President Donald Trump on Sunday at Mar-a-Lago to discuss a proposed peace plan aimed at ending Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The meeting comes as the conflict nears its fourth year, with Russia making significant advances on the battlefield. Zelensky revealed that Trump informed him about discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding a 20-point peace plan, and he requested security guarantees for Ukraine lasting 50 years.

The talks focused on security guarantees for Ukraine, with Zelensky emphasizing their importance in achieving lasting peace. Trump expressed optimism, stating they’re “getting a lot closer, maybe very close” to an agreement, although challenges remain, particularly regarding the Donbas region. European leaders joined part of the meeting, stressing the need for robust security guarantees.

Zelensky also highlighted Russia’s recent attacks on Ukraine, saying they’re a response to US-brokered peace efforts. Trump believes Putin is serious about peace, citing their two-hour phone call. The meeting reflects Trump’s efforts to position himself as a global peacemaker, with Ukraine and Gaza peace initiatives dominating his foreign policy agenda.
