The Ukrainian community in Malta recently held a demonstration in Valletta to mark the anniversary of the Olenivka prison killings, a tragic event that resulted in the deaths of at least 50 Ukrainian prisoners of war. The demonstration aimed to raise awareness about the massacre, which occurred on July 29, 2022, in the Donetsk region of Ukraine, and to condemn Russia’s actions.

The Olenivka prison killings are widely regarded as a war crime, with allegations that Russia intentionally orchestrated the mass murder to tarnish Ukraine’s reputation and obstruct the supply of Western weaponry. The incident sparked international outrage, with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, calling for a thorough and independent investigation into the incident.

The Ukrainian community in Malta used the demonstration to highlight the ongoing struggles faced by Ukrainian prisoners of war and civilians held captive by Russia. They also emphasized the need for accountability and justice for the victims of the Olenivka prison killings and other war crimes committed by Russia.
