The recent Ukraine war talks in Geneva have concluded without a breakthrough on the key issue of territory, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stating that the negotiations were “difficult” and that positions differ significantly. Despite US mediation, Russia and Ukraine remain at odds over who controls what land in a post-war settlement, with Russia pushing for full control of Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region and Ukraine rejecting this demand.

The talks did yield some progress on a ceasefire monitoring mechanism involving the United States, but sensitive issues related to occupied territory and the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant remain unresolved. Zelenskyy emphasized that European participation is crucial for a sustainable agreement, and officials from Britain, France, Germany, and Italy were present in Geneva for talks.

The negotiations are set to continue, with both sides agreeing to meet again soon. US President Donald Trump has been pressuring Ukraine to come to the table quickly, but Zelenskyy has expressed concerns that this pressure is unfair and could undermine lasting peace.
