US President Donald Trump is considering seizing Iran’s Kharg Island, a crucial oil export hub, as part of ongoing negotiations to end the conflict. Trump stated that taking control of Iran’s oil would be his “favourite thing,” but acknowledged that some people in the US might object, calling them “stupid”.

The island is a key part of Iran’s oil infrastructure, and capturing it would significantly impact the country’s economy. Trump claimed that Iran’s parliamentary speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, had authorized the passage of oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz, saying “He’s the one who authorised the ships to me”.

The US has deployed thousands of troops, including the 82nd Airborne Division, to the region, and Trump warned that if a deal isn’t reached soon, the US could escalate its response, including strikes on Iran’s energy infrastructure.

Iran has threatened to launch ground invasions of Gulf Arab countries and new attacks if US troops land on its territory. The situation remains tense, with global oil prices surging above $115 per barrel.
