A devastating shipwreck off Libya’s coast has left 53 migrants dead or missing, including two babies, according to the United Nations migration agency. The rubber boat, carrying 55 people, capsized north of Zuwara on February 6, after departing from Zawiya the previous night. Only two Nigerian women survived the tragedy, rescued by Libyan authorities. One survivor lost her husband, while the other lost her two babies.
The incident highlights the perilous journey migrants face in the Central Mediterranean, with over 1,300 reported dead or missing in 2025. The IOM stresses the need for stronger international cooperation to tackle trafficking networks and provide safe migration pathways.
