The remains of Libyan Army Chief General Muhammad Ali Ahmad al-Haddad, who was killed in a plane crash in Turkey, are set to be repatriated. Al-Haddad, along with four other senior military officials and three crew members, died when their private jet crashed shortly after takeoff from Ankara’s Esenboga Airport. The Libyan government has announced three days of national mourning, with flags flying at half-mast at state institutions.
The plane, a Dassault Falcon 50, had reported an electrical malfunction and requested an emergency landing before crashing near Kesikkavak village in Ankara’s Haymana district. Turkish authorities have launched an investigation into the crash, with the country’s Justice Ministry assigning four prosecutors to lead the probe.
Al-Haddad was a key figure in Libya’s military and had been working towards unifying the country’s divided armed forces. His death has been met with condolences from Libyan and Turkish officials, who described him as a unifying figure.
