The earthquake that hit Myanmar was absolutely devastating—one of the worst disasters the country has seen in years. The official death toll has now passed 2,000, with over 3,900 injured, and that number is expected to climb. The government has declared a week of mourning, with flags at half-mast until April 6.
In Mandalay, one of the hardest-hit cities, the situation is beyond grim. Rescue operations have started to slow down, but the destruction is everywhere—roads split open, buildings reduced to rubble. Many people are too afraid to return home because of constant aftershocks, so they’ve been camping out in the streets for days. Some have tents, but others, including children, are just lying on blankets in the open, trying to stay away from collapsing structures.
Among the victims were several foreign nationals, including three Chinese and two French citizens. But with communication still down in many parts of the country, the full extent of the damage is still unclear. The 7.7-magnitude quake was so powerful that tremors were felt in China, Thailand, Vietnam, and parts of India.
It’s a dire situation, and for now, all people can do is wait—hoping for help, and bracing for more bad news.
