Roberta Metsola, the president of the European Parliament, has called for an immediate ceasefire, the release of hostages, and greater accountability for the distribution of humanitarian aid, calling the situation in Gaza “catastrophic.”
Metsola emphasized that the European Parliament “has always and will always condemn the killing of innocent civilians” during a joint news conference in Copenhagen with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.
“We are the largest provider of humanitarian assistance. We need to know where that aid is going and how it is getting to the people who need it,” she said.
In light of the conflict, Metsola reaffirmed his support for a two-state solution and pointed out that the European Parliament is currently examining the EU-Israel association agreement.
Echoing Metsola’s worries, Frederiksen said that all hostages must be freed and aid must get to Gaza immediately.
Metsola is presently in Denmark in advance of the start of the Danish Presidency of the EU Council on July 1. She referred to it as a “critical moment” for Europe and commended Denmark’s dedication to security, democracy, and competitiveness.
