De La Salle College, Stella Maris College, and St Benild School are set to embark on a significant transformation, transitioning to a co-educational system over an 11-year period, starting from the 2025/26 scholastic year. The governing body, the Board of the Trust of the Brothers of the Christian Schools (De La Salle Brothers) in Malta, has announced this major shift, aligning with the universal mission of St John Baptist de La Salle, Pope Francis’ teachings, and the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

The transition will commence with the Year 1 intake in 2025, with a balanced mix of boys and girls, following the national Church School ballot system. Subsequent year groups will remain unaffected until the phased introduction of co-education reaches each level. By 2031/32, girls will join Year 7 (Form 1) classes, and the full transition is expected to be completed by the 2035/36 scholastic year.

This decision follows extensive consultation with stakeholders, including staff, parents, and students. Joe Gilson, Chair of the Trust, emphasized the alignment with the Lasallian mission and contemporary educational values. This move brings the schools in line with existing co-educational institutions in Malta, including nine church schools at the primary level and secondary schools like St Albert the Great and St Aloysius College.

The transition aims to foster a more inclusive and diverse educational environment, enriching the learning experience for students and promoting equality and social responsibility. By adopting a co-educational model, these Lasallian institutions will provide students with valuable opportunities for growth, collaboration, and mutual understanding.

The phased introduction will allow for a seamless integration of girls into the existing school structure, ensuring minimal disruption to current students. As the schools navigate this significant change, they remain committed to their core values and mission, providing a holistic education that prepares students for success in an ever-changing world.
