Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has emerged victorious in a landslide election, securing a two-thirds supermajority in the lower house of parliament. This historic win marks a significant turning point for Takaichi, who became Japan’s first female leader in October last year. Her Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) won 316 out of 465 seats, its strongest result since 1955, giving Takaichi strong political power to push forward her agenda.
Takaichi’s victory is seen as a mandate for her policies, including suspending the 8% sales tax on food for two years, boosting defense spending, and revising Japan’s pacifist constitution. Her win has been welcomed by international leaders, including US President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who praised her leadership and vision.
The election outcome is expected to have significant implications for Japan’s economy and global relations. Takaichi’s plans for fiscal stimulus and tax cuts have already sent shockwaves through financial markets, with the yen and government bonds experiencing volatility.
