The German government has sacked the embattled head of Deutsche Bahn, Richard Lutz, as part of efforts to overhaul the ailing public rail network. Once renowned for its punctuality and efficiency, Germany’s rail service has experienced a significant decline in recent years due to chronic underinvestment. Passengers frequently complain about long delays and cancelled trains, with almost 40% of long-distance services running late last year.

Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder announced Lutz’s departure, citing the need for the company to become faster, leaner, more effective, and economical. Schnieder also revealed plans to present a major overhaul plan for the rail network in late September. The government aims to establish a 500-billion-euro fund to fix crumbling infrastructure.

Lutz, who took the helm of Deutsche Bahn in 2017, will stay on until a successor is found. The hiring process for his replacement is expected to begin immediately. Critics argue that changing the boss won’t solve the underlying issues, emphasizing the need for improved policies and increased funding.

The rail network’s problems have been exacerbated by falling profits and a debt burden of over 20 billion euros. Deutsche Bahn has initiated efforts to renew parts of the network, but it’s likely to take years to complete. The sacking of Lutz comes after the train drivers’ union, GDL, called for his removal in July, citing poor performance.
