A French Masonic lodge is at the center of a shocking murder trial, with 22 defendants accused of operating covert hit squads linked to the Athanor lodge in Puteaux, a Paris suburb. The group, comprising intelligence officers, police, and civilians, faces charges of murder, attempted murder, aggravated assault, and criminal conspiracy. The alleged ringleaders, Jean-Luc Bagur, Frederic Vaglio, and Daniel Beaulieu, are accused of orchestrating violent acts, including the killing of racing driver Laurent Pasquali and an attempted hit on business coach Marie-Helene Dini. Thirteen defendants face life imprisonment if convicted.

The trial, expected to last at least three months, has revealed a web of deceit and manipulation, with defendants claiming they were acting on behalf of the French government. The case has raised concerns about the involvement of state agents in organized crime and the blurring of lines between intelligence operations and mafia activities.
