The European Union’s decision to reduce its reliance on nuclear energy has been labeled a “strategic mistake” by EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Speaking at a nuclear energy summit in Paris, von der Leyen emphasized that nuclear power offers a reliable and affordable low-emission alternative, crucial for Europe’s energy security. The EU’s nuclear energy share has plummeted from one-third in 1990 to just 15% today, leaving the bloc heavily dependent on imported fossil fuels.

This shift has made Europe vulnerable to volatile global energy markets, exacerbated by the ongoing Middle East conflict. Von der Leyen announced a €200 million EU investment guarantee to stimulate development of small modular reactors, aiming for operational deployment by the early 2030s. French President Emmanuel Macron echoed this sentiment, highlighting nuclear power’s role in achieving energy sovereignty and decarbonization.

The EU is now reassessing its energy strategy, balancing climate goals with energy security concerns. As Europe navigates this complex landscape, nuclear energy is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping its future.
