Several European countries, including France, Germany, Italy, and the UK, have expressed deep concern over Israel’s plans to expand the death penalty, citing its potentially discriminatory nature against Palestinians. The proposed bill, championed by far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, would allow military courts to impose the death penalty for terrorist acts causing death, even if unintended. The foreign ministers warn that this could undermine Israel’s democratic principles and commitments to human rights.
The Council of Europe has also urged Israel to abandon the bill, emphasizing that the death penalty is inhumane and has no place in modern justice. Amnesty International has condemned the proposal, stating it would further entrench discriminatory practices in Israel’s legal system. If passed, the bill is expected to face legal challenges and potentially reach the Supreme Court.
