The European Union will attend the inaugural meeting of US President Donald Trump’s “Board of Peace” this week, but will not join as a member. Instead, the EU will participate as an observer, with European Commissioner for the Mediterranean, Dubravka Suica, representing the bloc in Washington. This decision reflects the EU’s long-standing commitment to implementing the Gaza ceasefire and supporting reconstruction efforts in the region.

The Board of Peace, initially designed to oversee the Gaza truce and reconstruction, has expanded its scope to address broader international conflicts, raising concerns among EU member states about its governance and compatibility with the UN Charter. Despite reservations, some EU countries, including Hungary and Bulgaria, have accepted invitations to join the board, while others, like France and Germany, have declined or expressed concerns.
