A commuter train derailed near Barcelona, Spain, killing one person and injuring 37 others, just two days after a high-speed train collision in southern Spain claimed 42 lives. The accident occurred when a retaining wall collapsed onto the tracks due to heavy rainfall in Gelida, around 35 minutes outside Barcelona. Emergency services responded quickly, dispatching 20 ambulances and 38 firefighter units to the scene. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals, with five people in serious condition.
The incident has raised concerns about Spain’s rail safety, following the devastating train collision in Andalusia. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed his condolences to the victims and their families. The country’s rail infrastructure operator, Adif, has imposed temporary speed limits on parts of the Madrid-Barcelona line due to reported track irregularities.
